Let's Talk!
To the Body of Christ;

My name is Pastor John. I am the senior pastor & program manager for a church and after school program in the Brooklyn Park Maryland community. Since April 2006 we have provided at-risk youth & young children a safe & supervised place after school. We are able to help these children with some school work, positive behavioral training, and social development. Those who come to the program get to have fun with friends, play some table games, & know that they are safe. We offer this as a free program.
Please help us reach these at-risk kids. Since U B Lighthouse is the community youth outreach ministry of our home church we are under their 501c3 non-profit status. The U B Lighthouse has its’ own bank account and finance team to assure good stewardship. Any donations sent should be written to Brooklyn Park Church UB Lighthouse Youth Mission. The web-site will be updated with a list of those who have blessed our ministry, unless requested to stay anonymous. Thank you for your time and consideration toward helping us help our neighborhood children.

Purpose:
“The UB Lighthouse After School Program was established in April 2006 for the purpose of reaching out to the at-risk youth and young children of our Brooklyn Park community.”

“Community Need of At-Risk Youth & Young Children”

1) The level of youth upon youth violence, intimidation, & aggressive behavior has increase to levels more in line with what is normally associated with the inner city gang & drug culture.
2) There are over 70 registered sex & child sex offenders living within a 2 mile radius of our church near to schools, parks, daycare providers, & other locations young children spend time playing.
3) There is a large number of latchkey children & youth living unsupervised within our community.
4) Due to the liberal laws of the state of Maryland & the lack of a juvenile correction program there is no strong deterrent for dealing with the rising juvenile crime problem those living in our community faces on a day to day basis.
a. Within a 3 block radius of our church there has been 2 death, 3 wounded, & a large number
of robberies involving the use of a hand gun.
b. In a 2 year period the local police department has conducted 3 major drug bust targeting 9 homes within 2 blocks of our church. Additional smaller drug bust have also been done over this same time period. It has not diminished the drug activity in our community.
c. I have witnessed 3 youth gang fights right near church in the past 4 months where the police had to be called. Police could not make any arrest due to the laws of the state. This knowledge has empowered & emboldened teens to insight fear in the lives of those living in our community.

Goals:
A) To provide at-risk teens and young children a safe and supervised place to hang out with friends after school.
B) To give at-risk teens and young children an alternative to the street & gang culture that is growing in our community.
C) To help protect at-risk teens and young children from the large number of registered & unregistered child sex offenders that live within our community.
D) To become a positive influence on the social & spiritual lives of the at-risk teens & young children of our community.

Objectives:
A) To provide opportunities for recreation through arts & crafts, game tables, video & board games, outside activities, etc…
B) To provide opportunities for educational assistance to those children in need, and help target those students who may need additional help through a tutoring program.
C) To develop a mentoring program similar to “Big Brother/Big Sister for the purpose of encouraging positive social & character development.

To Date:
“Since April 2006 the U B Lighthouse Youth After School Program has seen 160+ at-risk teens & young school age children come through our doors. This is about 33% of the teens and children living within our local community. Our current facility can house up to 20 children. We only have 5 recreational activities & 1 area set up for educational help.”
“In May of 2007 the Brooklyn Park Church & UB Lighthouse family began a building project to expand our church parsonage with a 30 foot by 40 foot addition. The original & new basement will be area will be used to expand the capacity our after school program. We will have around 2,000 square feet of space when all renovations and new construction is completed. This will allow us to add 17 additional activity areas & 3 education station to our program. We will be able to increase our student capacity up to 80 students a day.” (20% of our Community Youth & Children)
“We have received over $15,000.00 in donations from area businesses, members of our church, from other United Brethren churches & church members, citizens living within our community, and a few local state politicians. Some of these donations from local businesses have come in the form of free building materials, deferred cost or discount of materials purchased, savings on rental equipment cost, & deferred labor cost. All of these donations were geared toward the foundation & basement area of the addition. We are waiting for good weather & our volunteer help to finish the block walls of the new basement area. All material needed to finish this part of the project are on hand.”

Future Needs:
To complete the building project we need to raise an additional $18,000.00. This will allow us to complete the top floor, which will help replace housing space lost when the renovation of the existing parsonage basement is completed for sole use of the after school program. This includes the cost of a heating &cooling system for the addition, the cost of the additional recreation game tables, computer desk, educational tutoring equipment, & building materials.”

Breakdown:
1) Building Materials: $10,000.00
2) Heating/Cooling: $5,000.00
3) Activity Equipment: $3,000.00

Long-Term Plan: Development of Grant Program for Program Budget Needs
“These funds will be applied for through available federal & private grants, not through direct soliciting of donation from previous donors.

1) Program Coordinator: (Full-Time: Entire UB Lighthouse Mission Ministry) $30,000.00
2) Activity Director: (2 Part-Time Positions) Oversee After School Center) $15,000.00
3) Program Cost: (Utility Cost, Administrative/Office Cost, Equipment, etc…) $5,000.00
4) Scholarship Program: (Youth Ministry Training, Tutors, Campership) $10,000.00

Expansion of UB Lighthouse: “Holy Trinity Family Life Mission”

Purpose:
“Holy Trinity Family Life Mission is an existing program that provides counseling, health & wellness, social development, family, & educational services to youth and young children who are wards of the state & courts, are in foster care, & families from extreme depressed situations.”

Future Plan:
“Holy Trinity Family Life Mission is looking to come under the umbrella of the Brooklyn Park Church UB Lighthouse Mission Ministry. They currently use space in our church basement to house some of their program needs. Joining forces will allow us to strengthen our effectiveness & expand our pull on grants for both programs. Funding will be sought from grants and not from private donors.”
